TOKOMARU BAY.

♦ — - — It is pleasing •■ to report • that the weather is fine: for verily 'the-, fine days this summer have 'been 'fe# arid far bei tw-4en. For fourteen days 'after the last disastrous flood Ave Avere inflicted by a moist wind from, the south-east, with just sufficient drizzle to keep everything outdoors in a quagmire. It is quite unusual to have a. wind off -,the sea for so long a period, and the salt-laden atmosphere AVrought havoc in the local gardens that were at all exposed. Even large tr^es were affected, and not only fruit trees, but large pines and gunis haviJ?;theii*yfoliage all shrivelled on the Aveaither side. The Aresterly Atinds wliich have been blowing this week, although usually looked on as th© essence of boredom, 'havo been welcomed like old friends, and the bay is fast i*eclining to its former peaceable appearance, and its inhabitants into their former peaceable state of mind. Last Sunday steady rain sel in and made the creeks temporarily un ford able, arid the Mangahauini Valley impassable t'o r wheeled traffic. HoAvever, 'a -'few -days' of dry winds and a good gang of '(dry) roadnien have, made the road at least passable*?-. The hills all round the district, 'which at this time of the year, are usually look•inj...brown and burnt up, are. covered with an abundance of green feed, but one cannot help being struck by the shortage of stock. No doubt the. high prices riding for all classes of stock is responsible- for this. An adjourned Native Land Court from Tolaga Bay is at present sitting in Tokomaru Bay, in the Lyric hall. The Court was opened yesterday, Judge Jones presiding, Avith Paaka Turej/ acting as kaiwhaka Maori. The Court Avill be sitting locally for about a. week or ten days. — Correspondent.
