WAIKOHU COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Waikohu County Council was held to-day. Present: Os. C White (chairman).. A. Smith, A. A. Fraser, F. Shanks, L. B. Tulloch, G. Gaukrodger, and Abbotsford Smith. The .standing orders were suspended ' to allow A. J. Curtis to interview the ' Council in reference to his contract on ' the Makaretu road. Mr Curtis asked for an extension of time, owing to unfavorable weather and scarcity of labor. — It was decided to grant three months' extension. Mr J. Gardner wrote saying that he ! had arranged to purchase from A'lv Sorensen the area necessary to complete access to the boundary of Wharekopae ' 2B block at a total cost of £61/ which, added to the cost of fencing,, would ' make his expenditure more than equal to the amount granted by the Council.*Received. Dr Sydney Smith, district health officer, forwarded a copy of the Order-in-Council revoking the appointment of the Cook Hospital Board as local authority under "The Public Health Act, 1908," in the Cook and Waikohu Coiinties as from January Ist, 1917. — Received. The clerk of the Cook County Council (Mr -John Warren) wrote saying that his Council is prepared to subscribe the sum of £12 10s per annum as its share df -the cost "of .^maintaining Taumata road if the Waikohu County Council will carry out the work and on condition that no extra work shall be charged against the Cook Cpunty Council. — Decided to -ratify the .agreement subject to the understanding that it< includes ordinary maintenance only, neV^Nvorks, such as' new bridges and metalling to be dealt with by separate agreement. The district engineer, Mr C. E. Armstrong, replying to , the Council's letter o C October 3rd, asking for a statement ot unexpended authorities for works, stated that he is prepared to (submit to head office any proposal the Council wishes to, make in reference to re-allocation, if good reason can be shown for suoh.-r-Decided to. request the -allocation of certain authorities for work suggested by the engineer. A number of settlers on the Makaretu road petitioned the Council to take over from the contractors the first two and a-half miles of the Makaretu deviation as soon as completed.
