However (says the ; Lyttelton Times) details regarding the amalgamation are not yet available. "Young People's Day" 'was observed m St. Andrew's Church yesterday. Te the monthly meeting of tho New Zealand Trotting Association a letter was received from the secretary of. the Poverty Bay Trotting Club forwarding a declaration from G. W. Elmore, a visitor, who has , been making a close and scientific study of the rock paintings of New Zealand, is a shrewd' observer, says the Otago Daily Times, and prefaces a lecture to the Otago Institute with some entertaining' comments and criticisms. It had surprised him, he said, to find the peo2)le of the North Island so depreciate the South Island. That was a thing he could not understand. In Auckland he and his wife Avere told that, when they got to Wellington they would not like it, but ho did not see anything wrong 'with i Wellington. In Wellington they were told they would not like Christchurch; it was "too flat and ugly. If Wellingtonians could call Christchurch 'Ugly, he did not know what adjective to apply to Wellington. ll*e could say frankly that if they were- going to "locate" m New Zealand, they would certainly choose Dunedin. That was not flattery, but the truth. In the matter of beauty, spots, there was. . nothing .that could touch Dunedin. '
