BRITISH ADVANCE STEADILY MAINTAINED. ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF TRANSLOY. FRENCH MAKE SUBSTANTIAL PROGRESS. (Reuter's Telegram.) PARIS, October 15. Semi-official : The British yesterday made more serious progress than "the dis-, cretion of their communiques indicate, but the Allies, only announce confirmed results. Moreover, the battle continues. The Allied operations commenced on Thursday and resulted m progress northwest of Gueudecourt and m the direatio t of Bapaume and Transloy. The enemy's precarious position' at Transloy, which has been incessantly bombarded for ten days, is aggravated by this advance. It is reported that the British already occupy- the outskirts of Transloy, which was defended most desperately. Its fall will compel the enemy to abandon their line on the heights between Gueudecourt and Morval. Wednesday's attack brought us up to the outskirts of Transloy. The German artillery was. very good and the enemy had hill positions on the • Bapaume-Peronne road and made the most of his advantage. Hard fighting continues at Transloy; which a Pomeranian regiment is obstini ately defending. ' Meanwhile, the enemy is making • frantic efforts to dig a fiesh line of . trenches and fortify villages for the defence of Bapaume. He is employing large numbers of Russian prisoners, coni trary to the rules of war. (The Times.) ' LONDON, October 15. The Times correspondent at headquarters says : — Without giving the enemy a rest, we struck again, after consolidati ing, still further driving back the i enemy on the right from the EaucourtF Warlinoourt road on a four mile front, l the French co-operating beyond Les % Boeufs. j .We advanced within five hundred yards of Le Transloy cemetery, gaining a thousand yards and forming here a « new north-westerly zig-zag line to the - Flers-Ligny-Tliellay road, where fighting - is still proceeding. Our artillery and aeroplanes were again magnificent, the latter continually circling over the enemy's lines and ignorf ing the air guns' constant fusillading. The Echo Beige says: Last week fifty - , three train loads of youthful German sol- { diers reinforced the Somme' front. , (Australian and N.Z. Gable Association.) LONDON, October 15. .
