The deceased who was 53. years of age had been m the Hospital . since April 26 last. Early that morning [he had been found lying on the floor of j the Masonic stables m Lowe street, pre- ! sumably having fallen from the loft. jHe was conscious, but appeared to be suffering considerably, and when taken jto the Hospital it was found he had sustained a broken back. Deceased had come to town from the Coast a few days before the accident. He has relatives residing at Otane. The Coroner has decided that an inquest is not necessary. Advice has been received m Gisborne of -the death of Mr. George Grant, father of the late Chaplain-Major' W. Grant. The late Mr. Grant, who was 85 years of age, had been a colonist for nearly half a century. A typical Highlander, tho late. Mr. Grant was born at Kerriemuir, Forfarshire, Scotland, m 1831 'and came to New Zealand from Scotland m 1870. with .Mrs Grant and family. He settled m Hawke's Bay, and entered into the sawmilling industry at Waipukurau, subsequently moving to Ormondville. Latterly he had been residing . with his married daughter, Mrs. Smale, at Ormondville, his wife having predeceased him four years ago. The family comprises three sons and four daughters, who are well known throughout Hawke's Bay. In his earlier days the late Mr Grant had taken a very keen interest m political and educational affairs, and notwithstanding hie ripe old age retained remarkably good health and vitality right up to the last. His death was brought about last Saturday by an attack of influenza. In addition to the late Chaplain-Major Grant,, who laid down his life on Gallipoli, the Grant family is represented at the front by no less than six grandsons. ammaammmmmmmaaawmmrmmmm
