AUCKLAND, this day. - Alexander MacMahon, who eloped with his landlady's daughter, a girl under 1§ years of age, leaving the. house by a window late at night, appeared at the Police Court on a charge of ab-' CJuction, and was sentenced to six months' hard labor and eightteen months' reformative treatment. WELLINGTON, last night. The Minister for Public Health to-day opened a conference with the four Maori members of the House of Representatives—Dr Pomare,?and Messrs Ngata, Parata, and Tau Henane — to consider the best steps to be taken to promote the health and well-being of the Maori race. One of the proposals, it ia understood, was to establish a general medical •! service for the Maori district. A meeting of city property owners tonight discussed the proposed legislation , affecting increased rents during the war. The following resolution was adopted : "^'That this meeting strongly objects to legislation as contained m tho War Legislation Amendment Bill on tho ground, that such legislation is inequ table and unjust."
