He delivered several speeches on the Somme front. Addressing wounded men at Peronne he saic(: "My earnest desire is to take a pjace m the trenches and deal the enemy such blows a 8 my age and strength will permit. The inscrutable Almighty has willed otherwise. The leadership of the country and the forces on land and sea has been committed by Divine destiny to my care. The burden of thinking, deciding, and leading has laid on me. My life must not be *• risked m the foremost line of battle, where my feelings, if unrestrained, would swiftly carry me. My life must carefully be conserved for Germany's welfare m order td carry out the duties assigned by God.'' Some German comments on the speech savor of lese majeste.
