THE BATTLE FRONT.
The High Commissioner reports: — • LONDON, July 24, 2.15 p.m. General Haig imports : Apart from tlie mutual continuous shelling during the right,, there was a comparative calm following Yesterday's severe fighting. Yfesterday, between Highwood and Guillemont, repeated enemy counter-ut-, tacks gained no advantage, our artillery and machine-gun fire inflicting very heavy casualties. We gained" ground near Highwood and m the direction of Guillemont. In, the neighbourhood of Pozieres we secured important advantages, m spite of stubborn, enemy defence. A large -portion of the village is now ours, we capturing two guns and 60 more prisoners. LONDON, July 24, 2.55 p.m. The French official report says: On the Somme the night was calm. The weather was bad. Northwards of the Aisne our reconnaissances ..- penetrated enemy trenchesnear Valley, bringing back some prisoners. On the riglii bank of the Meuse during' the night a small action took place m - the neighborhood of La Chapelle Saint Fin. We captured thirty prisoners. *New calculations shbw that the total number of prisoners taken m this sector, m ten days exceeds 800.
