GERMAN COMMUNIQUE.
(Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) (Received July 24, 2.15 p.m.) AMSTERDAM, July 23. A German communique states : Strong reconnoitring' detachments m the vicinity of Richebourg were repulsed after increased artillery fire. In the evening and night between the Ancre and the Somme there were infantry attacks on the Th epval-Guillemont "front. The British attacks, despite heavy losses and the number of troops engaged, ifai'led. There -was violent hand-to-hand fighting near West Pozieres, Foureaux Wood, and the western edge of Longueval. Tlie enemy's attempted attacks between Guillemont and the Somme were stifled m the trenches. Our cui-tain fire on the Somme is very strong. Artillery duels south of the Somme, followed by separate French attacks, failed.
