CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

The council of the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce met late yesterday afternoon. Present : Messrs J. W. Bright (chairman), T. G. Lawless, W. 0. Long, M. L. Foster, C. A. Fenwick, S. S. Dfean and W. Hamilton Irvine (secretary). The Chairman reported, that Hie had had an interview with (the District Telegraph Engineer regarding coin-in-the-s'ot telephones, and the engineer said four machines would be installed as an experiment, and if successful others would be installed.— r Mr Lawless thought some machines should be installed outside the Borough. The station-master in charge of the Gisborne section advised that the Chamber's application for a crane for the railway had been > forwarded to head office. — Received. Replies were received from various banks regarding tlie issue of soiled bank notes. The 'replies showed that the matter was receiving the attention of th© various head offices. The present position could not very well be avoided owing to the fact that notes were at present legal tender, and to tho shortage of paper tfor printing notes. They were doing their best to cope with the difficu'ty. — Received. The Greymoutli Chamber solicited support to their resolution expressing ap- 1 pre'eiation of Mr Hiley's good work in j establishing the ofFjce df "Commercial Ageoifc" as attached to the Railway Department, and urging that should a vacancy occur in that office a strictly commercial man be appointed. — Decided to approve of the suggestion. The Association of ' Chambers ' of Commerce wrote asking that any reconwnondation from the Gisborne Chamber regarding the Finance Bill be forwarded promptly so that they could be considered by the executive along with resolutions from the Wellington Chamber. — The. Chairman said he thought it was a matter, for Parliament. He did not think anything the Chamber cTiuld do would make any difference. — Mr Dean said some other chambers had already passed resolutions, and he thought it was too late to do anything now. — A telegram - was .also received Ifrom. Mr Kells from. Wellington, stating it was proposed to raise the interest on second mortgages 'to.' B per cent, and suggesting that chambers should urge same for_.stock mortgages. — Tlie Chairman said h© understood tho Finance Minister had recognised that and attended to it. A circular was -received from the'General -Manager of Railways regarding assistance of business men in advertising the attractions of New Zealaud by the distribution of poster stamps, samples of of which were enclosed.-^Beceived. The Secretary of the Food ComnuV siou (forwarded a copy of minutes of conference held- in Gisborne between the Commissioners aaid representatives of the Chamber, regarding' post-war trade. — Tlie Chairman said it appeared to him that they could hot do better than support the resolutions passed by the Auckland Chamber. Members could peruse the minutes, and any proposal could come before the next meeting of the Chamber.' On the motion of Mr Lawless, seconded by Mr Fenwick^ it vas /decided to support an application to the Railway Department for a loading bank at Bell's gravel : pit at Te Karaka to enable local bodies to be supplied .with shingle.
