THE NEW S.YMOUTN FIRE.
HEAVY LOSSES: WILL PROBABLY - EXCEED £200,000. (Per Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, this day. Tho insurances in connection with the fire are incomplete, owing to the confusion and loss of papers. Tho Theatre Royal is a total loss.* It was owned by the Taranaki Amusements Co. There was £500 in the Guardian, but £1000 would not cov^er the loss, which includes 400 new seats stored in the* basement for a new picture theatre, and which were \ininsured. Monteath and Austin Bewley's offices, owned bv Wyborn. were insured for £6CO in "the New Zealand Office, and £100 in the Commercial Union, being a total loss. M'ontentlvs effects wera uninsured. Bewley's small loss 'was covered in the office of Bi"itish Dominions. McE wan and Co. "-had a total loss, the insurances being ima-Taalab'le. Govett and Quilliam's building Was insured in the Royal office for £1000, and the furniture in the Royal for £400— a total loss. Veale's building, owned by Cunningham's estate, were insured for £400 in the South British ; stock, £500 in| the South British. Veale's loss is £1000. Cannon's furniture, in the same buildinp-. £175 in the Royal Exchange office. ■ Th.9 South British, State, Phoenix, and Guardian offices are interested for smaller amounts — partial losses. Across the street, Sladderj and Palmer (surveyors) lost all their valuable plans, instruments, etc. The; Fire Brigade worked splendidly, but valuable time was lost in giving the alarm. The Brigade's efforts on arrival had to be directed to savinor the buildings across Devon street and the White Hart hotel and Coffee Palace, khich were both endangered. It was impossible to check the main fire Tho total Ipsses will probably exceed £20,000.
