GERMAN MASSED ATTACK.
ENEMY RECAPTURE PORTION OF WOOD. STRUGGLE CONTINUES VIOLENT. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) (Received July 20, 11.15 a.m.) LONDON, July 19. Sir Douglas Haig reports that a German attack at night was directed on new positions east of Bazentin village. Very large German reinforcements were collected for this attack. After intense artillery' fire an assaalt was delivered in dense masses at 5.30 in the afternoon. Fighting continued all night long being particularly violent at Belville Wood. After suffering the heaviest losses the enemy succeeded in recapturing a portion of the wood, and obtained a footing in the northern outskirts of Longueval. The struggle continues violent. German attacks elsewhere, including three separate attacks at Waterlot Farm, were completely broken down by our fire. There has been no event of importawe on the rest of the front.
