RAIDS ON TRENCHES; - ' EXPERIENCE OF THE MAORIS. CAPTAIN JOLLY'S HEROIC DEATH(Special Cable.) (From the Official N.Z. War Correspondent.) HEADQUARTERS, July 18. With varying success the New- Zealanders continue raiding enemy trenches in the vicinity of Armerttieres. A German counter-raid caused several casual ties, mainly during the enemy bombardment. One machine gun crew was "casualtied" and buried with the gun, but "the gun was dug out and brought into action again. A recent attempted raid by , the Maoris was unsuccessful, but 'they cleverly outwitted an enemy ruse to entrap them, and returned without casualties. The Germans concerned were caught in the open by our guns and rifle fire, and thrown into confusion and suffered loss.. A party from the Rifle Brigade successfully raided the German) front, trench, inflicting casualties. Our bombardment wrecked their trenches and their dead were badly shattered. His body was located at dawn near our parapet, and was brought in under darkness of night. - A private who was under a suspended sentence of five years' penal servitude behaved with great heroism.
