I GERMAN' OFFENSIVE AGAINST BRITISH. HEAVY FIGHTING IN POGRESS. (Reuter's Telegram.) LONDON, July 19. Sir Douglas Haig reports : The Germans, after a • bombardment with lachrymatory gas shells, began an attack in the vicinity of Longueval and Bel- 1 ville Wood. Heavy fighting is in pro- j gress. The King has telegraphed tu SfaDouglas Haig expressing great admiration for the continued successful advance of the troops. ( He also conveys the Czar's congratulations. Sir Douglas Haig replied conveying the Army's thanks for their gracious appreciation.
