DESCRIPTIONS OF FIGHTING
FROM SHELL HOLE TO SHELL HOLE. THE WEST KENTS RESCUED. ■Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) LONDON, July 17. Mr Philip Gibbs, the war correspondent, says : — "The Germans dropped • high explosives through the naked trees m Trones Wood, opening great craters. Our men used these pits as a refuge and our wounded crawled backwards , from shell hole to shell hole, while the unwounded soldiers crawled forward m the sante way, keeping their bombs ready. They thus captured the wood. "A queer miracle happened here. A number of dirty, evil-looking English boys crawled from holes and seeing our men ahead, shoutf-d 'Hullo, lads!' while others sobbed and big tears rolled down their grimy faces. These were three hundred of the West Kents witli one officer, avlio had beon isolated by bearrage fire."
