Strong disapproval was expressed at a meeting of the executive of the Hawke's Bay War Relief Association at the-. action of the Wairarapa' Patriotic Association in .granting. -indiscriminately. £5 to every returned: soldier whether such soldier needed the money or not. A resolution to this effect was moved .by Mr G ." N^. Pharazyn and passed.

In the course of his* presidential addressi at- the annual meeting- of - the Oamaru Chamber of Commerce on Thursday evening, Mr\ \V. H. Rose quoted the trade figures and. the banking returns of the dominion with the remark that they might be characterised as marvellous, for they spelt prosperity "writ large." "This very gratifying state of our finances," lie said, "may be considered the 'safeguavd of Our trade, and i.s a guarantee that 'the Dominion's business will he kept goiiVoon lines as nearly normal as possible. To interfere with this 'by ■ withdrawing our surplus funds? for a local war loan would be unwise and would most likely bring about a condition of stringency* detrimentally affecting our whole" position. Mr Rose went on to advocate tl.-p imposition of a war tax- on. the abinmhril profits that have been made on -the' sale of products of the Dominion,- "^and to condemn the expenditure on racing and on drink, which he regarded • as simply lamentable in a time of war."
