A SUBMARINE EPISODE.

There is ono episode of submarine warfare that is worth recounting. The morning after the jinking, of the ' Norseman a British steamer was stuck up m the gulf by some machinery trouble. A submarine, no doubt tho same pirate that had torpedoed the Norseman, ranged alongside. The prey seemed .easy, and an officer and five men of the. undersea boat were sent on board to^ascertain whether there was anything, worth pinching. The, steamer, howeverj was provided with wireless, and oni the first appearance 'of '.the' enemy had -called urgently for help. A French torpedo boat happened to be only a few miles Way, and picking up the call raced up to the stationary steamer. The submarine's commander was slow in^ detecting her approach, but when lie did become aware of the proximity of the Frenchman he did not study the order of his going. He left the Britisher, clapped - down" the lid and dived. The 6ai'go boat, having effected the small necessary repairs m her engineroom, steamed back, id port, with a neat bag of six very disgusted German prisoners. They are now m detention locally, and tins submarine commander is wracking his brains for a plausible report; tbj -his superior officers. But most probably he will not' have to make it, for the antisubmarine . campaign lias at :lftst been organised on efficient lines, and the day of these hyenas of the sea is numbered. —Auckland, Sta£. .'-."• ' : '■
