REV. JAS. CARLISLE FAREWELLED.

TRIBUTES FROM NORTH EAST VALLEY CONGREGATION. .: Thero was a crowded . gathering m the North East Valley. Baptist ' Cliurchlast evening, reports tho Otago Daily Times of the 12th inst., to say farewell to the Rev. J. Carlisle, who has been transferred to Gisborne, after having had the pastorate of the> 'local congregation for four years. The gathering Was presided over by the Rev. R. S. Gray, and m the course of a brief address he said that Mr Carlisle' was going to a church where there was a good deal of hard work to be 'done* and he honed tliat while the Gisborne people were "praying for the success of Mr Carlisle's labors, the Valley congregation woujd also strengthen the hands ot their late pastor "by p_rayei\ The Revs. Bratt, Dallaston, Jenkins, and H. 8.. Gray (North East Valley Proabyterian I Cliurch) joined m expressing m appreciative terms the esteem m which Mr Carlisle had been held by other denominations m tlie district, and to the fact that he had drawn out true spirit of , worship amongst his people. Reference was also, made to the satisfactory manner m which ho had presided over the Otago and Southland Auxiliary, the executive of which, whilst regrettiug Mr Carlisle's departure, had congratulated him upon boinp invited to the important charge at Gisborne. A tribute was paid to Mr Carlisle's valuable-ser-vices m connection with Bible teaching m the day schools. On behalf of the W.C.T.U., Mrs Hislop spoke of the Union's appreciation of Mr Carlisle's aid on the .liquor question and presented Mrs Carlisle with a handsome bouquet. Mr.; George Calder, on behalf of the deacons of the church, said that their late pastor had obtained m the church more results than any of his predecessors, and he had taken .-extraordinary interest m the young . people. The services were really appreciated by the congregation, who hoped he would ' he as successful m Gisborne m preach-, me the Gospel as he had been m. the Valley, and even more so. He presented Mr Carlisle with a purse of sovereigns, mid Mm Carlisle With a cake basket. The rev. gentleman was also the recipient of a photo of the Sunday School teachers given as a mark of their appreciation. The Rev. Mr Carlisle, m replying .said he trasted he had always had a humble conception of his own services, and a still humbler conceptjon of hi* personality. Mrs Carlisle and himself would never forget m days to .come the debt of gratitude they owed ,to the North East Valley congregation. He had learned to love its members deeply, and especially those who had never allowed him to. enter the pulnit without joining him m prayer for blessing on his ministrations/ The congregation had been faithful to him, and Ive honed it would he as faithful to his successor.
