ALREADY A SUBSTANTIAL AMOUNT. (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. Discussing demands that have been made m some quarters for conscription of wealth as well as conscription of men, Mr Massey said : "If they mean Parliament and the Government are to make possession of all wealth for war purposes they are asking what is obviously impossible. The amount taken compulsorily by the taxation legislation of last session is approximately two millions perallium. if tho war continued more money would bo required m the same': way. The'Npeople now asking for increased taxation would, probably be the first to Biilfei" if it, Aras necessary to go. further." With reference to "the demand for graduated taxation, .Mr Massey said tho income tax was graduated. Many of tho larger firms and companies who were paying the higher rate of income tax also paid graduated land tax on their business premises. The ordinary land tax wag not increased la-st session, but the graduated', tax was increased all round 50 per cent.,, the increases m some instances running, into many hundreds, pej&ajinum. ". *lii
