IN THE HANDS OF TURKS.
AUSTRALIA N PRISONERS
MELBOURNE, Sept. 2. I According to news received here cable i advices from Alexandria' to .'the' -High j Commissioner's office m London indicate that there are now about 800 members I of the Australian Expeditionary Force m ' the Dardanelles m the hands' of tlie Turks as prisoners. These figures are arrived at. by adding together the returns of those. reported as ' "prisoners" awl "missing." and clieck- 1 ing the results by the elimination' of • those first reported "missinc*," but subsequently found to havo been wounded or killed, or to have died of wounds. A letter published by the London ' Post, from an Australian naval officer, now a. prisoner, suggests that the Turka are treating their captives fairly i well. The letter, which is dated from Afion, Kara Hissar, Asia Minor, says: — "We are all bein~ treated very 'well, and we will just have to be patient, and wait until peace is declared, which I sincerely hope will not be long. The monotony is terrible. We have nothing • to do .all day, aud have not seen a. book or 'paper yet, and are not likely to. jWe get out m the sun for two "horns' ejeercise every day, which is quite a y treat. . . .1 woujd be very grateful if you would send mt a parcefof papers and books — with' a little luck I may receive them. Address your letter : Australian Naval Prisoner, Turkey m Asia, . care of Admiralty, London." ' i '. I
