HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP.

SUCCESS OF GISBORNE I/ADIES'

TEAM

(Per Press Association.)

WELLINGTON, last night.

The sixth round of the ]Sfew Zealand ladies' hockey championship tournament was got off this afternoon, when play throughout was interesting — much more so, m fact, than might be assumed from the scores m two of the games. Results : —

Wellington 5 beat Canterbury 1. Wairarapa 5 beat Wanganui 0. Poverty Bay 1 beat Manawatu 0.

Hawke's Bay had a bye.

Wellington and Canterbury played an even, strongly-contested game. During tho first spell Miss Barr drew first blood with a goal for Canterbury. The locals, spurred to fresh endeavors, pushed home an attack which ended m Miss Carricks scoring and half-time ended without addition to the tally. In the second spell, Wellington assumed a strong offensive and had the southerners generally defending, ahd Misses Pickering and Dobbyn added two goals each to Wellington's score. The Wairarapa girls had no difficulty m accounting for the Wanganui team. The latter were practically on the defensive tb rou ghout the spells. In the first half Misses G. Grigg, B. Orr, and L. Duley netted goals for Wairarapa, and Miss Orr and Humphries added two more m the second spell aa the result of pretty stick work. Manawatu almost brought confusion upon Poverty Bay, whose career had been like victorious progress since their late entry into the tournament. In the first spell Manawatu did the greater part of tbe attacking, but the Gisborne girls' combined work was good, and their stubborn defence proved impregnable, while now and agauj tbey would shift the scene of operations and deliver spirited assaults on the enemy's fortrfess. During one of these forays Miss B.. Pearce shot a goal for Poverty Bay and the first spell ended m their favor I—o.1 — 0. Desperate efforts were made by both sides m the second half, which provided the best display of the afternoon. Repeated assaults were made on Gisborne's citadel by the Manawatu forces, but always with the same result. The attackers were beaten off after fine and spectacular, but fruitless endeavors. When Poverty Bay essayed forcing tactics, they found their opponents' protective formations unbreakable and so tho game ended without further score. The log to date is : —
