The enemy are retreating. A communique reports stubborn lighting between Lautske and J akobstadt. Though th<» Germans did not offer resistance to our bayonet charges, they delivered a series of attacks with the purpose ol driving the Russians from the right of the Duerna.

We held the. enemy's offensive southeast of Skidal, inflicting considerable loss.

The Russians continue their premeditated retreat, and occasionally deliver counter-attacks.

On the road to Kovno the Russians nre holding up groat enemy forces advancing along the Olvkaklevah railway. The enemy is supporting his offensive by artillery fire of a most violent character, which the Riussia ns arc enduring with the greatest courage. On the Sereth, south-west of Prembovl, our success was as important as at Tarnopol. We took prisoner 150 officers and 7000 men, and captured *36 machine guns.

The Russian losses were not important.

The enemy on Wednesday evening retreated m great haste towards Strypa.

The pursuit continues. Ova- captures on. the Sereth since August 3 are 383 officers and over 17.000 men and 99 guns. Military critics, m discussing the- victory at 'Tarnopol, point out that the Germans intended the invasion of Volhynia and Podolia, with the immediate object of striking- at the reai* of the Russians at Rovno, Dubno, and Krem-enr-tz. . „ The local conditions were favorable, with" plenty of good roads- audi no broad streams. Extensive forests facilitated the defence. - Tlie battle, was fought on a front of thirty miles, along a. stream flowing parallel with the railway two, miles west of the town.

The Germans liad elaborate preparations to break the Russian front, and had immense accu mini ati ons of ammunition.

[Tarnopol,' a town of Eastern Gahcia, 80 miles east-south-east of Lemberg, had a population' of 30,420, half being Jews.]
