At the opening of tho Chambers, of Commerce conference to-day Mr Herd.man, Attorney-General, referred to th*> anniversary of the declaration of war m New Zealand. Be emphasised the fact that the enemy's mercantile marine had been swept from the seas, that there had been no financial panic and no industrial collapse. Viewing the whole situation fairly,, no man could be otherwise than satisfied with the way thing* had been managed, considering the magnitude of the task involved. So far ai New Zealand was concerned the exports had reached a higher position than ever before and the banks were m ampler funds. ' He made an anpeal to all m New Zealand, irrespective of class, quality, or condition, to stand as one man m the true British spirit whilu facing the most terrific crisis m tho history of the British Empire. The conference passed a resolution expressing loyalty to the throne, and recording its determination to do all m its power to assist the Government m organising >and using to the fullest extent all thp resources of the Dominion to aid m continuing tho war until it it brought to a successful issue ; also expressing admiration at the gallant worlc of the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces. AUCKLAND, this day. The anniversary of the declaration of war was observed m Auckland tb-dav by public nioetings and special church services of intercession. The mayor presides at a patriotic demonstration at the Town Hall to-night. '
