SEVENTY THOUSAND REGISTER IN BRITAIN.
MANY FOR PATRIOTIC REASONS
London Times and Sydney, Sun Services(Received June 3, 8.30 a.m.) LONDON, June 2. Seventy thousand British women have registered for war service. Fourteen hundred -have been engaged, mostly m the clothing and ammunition trades. A majority of the women belong to the better classes, arid are offering their services for patriotic reasons. Positions arc given to the most needy. , The ' Government permits 20 per cent, of eligible men to enlißt. Apparently it beheves that Women cannot replace a man earning £300 a y«ar. The women's new occupations are as paymasters, ticket collectors, gardeners, bus drivers, bailiffs and telegraph messengers. Six hundred are employed as. munition workers at Vickers, Son and Maxim's works.
