At the Magistrate's Court to-day, Geo. Edward Hanson was charged \vn,h uuing liquor into Tvonthani camp; also with supplying whisky to a member of the sth, Reinforcements. He represented himself as a staff fern-oant-ma.jor from Dargaville. Inspector Hendry said the camp commandant desired him to point out the serious nature of the offence. Liquor was probably the cause of all the trouble m camp. Further, it had a detrimental effect on the discipline. If. liquor was taken into camp by strangers, the regulation concerning visitors would have to bo moi'e strictly adhered to. The Magistrate said that if Hanson was a sergeant-major, he should have known the regulations. Some interesting information concerning 1 the Otago red deer herd was given 1 to-day by a, deputation from the Acclimatisation Society to the Hon. Mr Fraser as member for Wakatipu. It was stated that Hie herd, which has been considered hy. oversea experts as one of the finest m the world, threatens to deteriorate rapidly owing to overstocking and malformation. During i the past Hvo years close on £800 has 'been spent m culling, but m order to retain the original standard of the herd it will be necessary to shoot a^. least two thousand this year and another two thousand m the following year. Apart from deterioration the herd is becoming troublesome to settlers. The society propose to spend £200 this year on culling, and asked Mr Fraser to urge on the Hon. Mr Hell the necessity for a State grant m order to further the work of thinning out. The Minister expressed sympathy and promised . to urge that a grant be made, remarking that it would be a thousand pities if the splendid herd m Hunter Valley, m Wanaka County, were permitted to hopelessly deteriorate. v
