CORRESPONDENCE.

THE CALL FOR MEN. (To the Editor of the Herald.) Sir, — I noticed and vend a lottor from "VolunUur" m your Saturday's iss»'it regarding married rni'ii who any 1 t'ligiblt for enlistmt'iit. 1 agvee with hint tiiil a single man's life is just as valuable to him as tho married man. I consider n is only right that the married men if New Zealand, say, with one child or no family, should fight for their country. At the present time 75 per cent, of Ivi\ chener's army aro married men «it the front, and I consider it is the duty of all the- New Zealand women to encout ago all their sons, brothers, sweethearts, and husbands, if possible, to enlist and fight at this critical time for their Kill!; and country. They should think of the poor Belgian women and girls, also tho wonrjen and babies who have lost their lives through the sinking of ships b.v German submarines. How would thsy like to undergo tho same torture? T consider it 'would be a _good plan for the Government to force all men, single or married, to register their names for Enlistment that are eligible. Take the single men first- and married men who would volunteei'. Give d certificate to all who 1 could not pass tho doctor; wo cannot blame them. lam sorry myceif I cannot go to tho front. I am getting near the allotted span of life, but if they would take me I would go now. I have my son at tho fr,oiit, I am pleased to say, and should he be so unfortunate as to lose his life while there, I will always be able to say : "He died fighting for his country — he was not a shirker." I a,lso approve of employers not giving work to the eligible man who will not fight, for. his. country. Let the married men, men with certificates and old men, if able, do the work. The women are taking the places of the men at the front m the Old Country. And I sincerely hope that after this terrible war is over that when our boys como back to their native country again a great distinction should be made between the shirker and the man who fought for his country. — I am, etc., FATHER OF A SON AT THE FRONT.

(To tbe .Editor ot the Herald.) Sir, — You would be doing a valuable service if you could, spare the space 'in your paper to wice the feelings of myself and others. , .Recently there have appeared, m your paper advertisements applying for men, , also stating- no man fit for active service need apply. Patriotic men who ha^o plenty of money to back them up should lead the way by enlisting themselves, for although 'married they would have the satisfaction of knowing that those they leave behind are well provided for. Having enlisted myself and not likely to be called o^ till the end of July, why all this fuss about more men?. — I am, etc., WORKER
