TURKS FUTILE ATTACKS.
THEIR LOSSES TWO THOUSAND. (Reoeired Juao 1. 9.45 a.m.) LONDON, May 3l The Press Bureau, reporting on the Dardanelles action, states : , "We de-' tected the enemy working under one of our piosta. On the 28th we successfully exploded a counter-mine. The Turks then effected a lodgment on the vacant trenches. We counter-attacked with the bayonet and recaptured the firing line trenches, whereupon , the Turks supporting the trenches surrendered. . Meanwhile heavy columns advanced m the bright • moonlight. Our- gunners' accurate crossfire demoralised the Turks, wliose second line of bomb-throwers tiung missiles into their own first line, completing the rout. The casualties were at least two- thousand and ours three hundred. The same night the Turks unsuccessfully attempted to recapture the position. . The French captured an important redoubt on the Turks' extreme right on the night <of the 28th and repulsed subsequent attacks. The High Commissioner reports: — LONDON. May 31, 4.50 p.m. At the Dardanelles on. Friday -we detected engineers of the enemy undermining the British, position. We exploded a counter mine very successfully. The same evening the Turks effected a lodgment m these vacant trenches. Our troops coinnter-aUocked with the bayonet, recapturing the firing, line and trendies, whereupon the Turks m support of the trenches surrendered. Heavy columns of the enemy advanced to make good a temporary local success.
