RELIEF OF WOUNDED.
Tlie Mayor of Wellington (Mr J. P. Luke) has received the ' following- letter -from Mr A. H. Miles, managing director of Messrs Murray;, Roberts and Co. : "I am authorised by the directors of my company to place at the disposal of ; the committee or trustees of the Nattional ""Fond for the relief of the wounded the sum of £1000 when the fund has been placed upon a. workable basis, and provided tliat the, moneys ♦will- be confined to the telief of the soldiers, sailors and others . wounded m the -w-ar, with their dependents aoid the dependents of those who lose their lives through, the - war. It will no doubt be found that all the funds' wliich may be collected for this object' will be * required for this purpose alone, and the movement will to some extent fail m Hts endeavor if any of the funds are diverted to any other associations, how{ever .deserving they may be. The sum named will be at the disposal of the committee or trustees as soon as the necessary arrangements are made for the administration of the, funds iii the direction I have ventured, to indicate." '■ Referring to Messrs Murray, Roberts and *Go.V most- generous offer, the Mayor stated that he had -already communicated* with the Mayors of the other three; centres suggesting the formation ,of a. National Fund for the relief. of the wounded soldiers and their dependents, m accordance with the motion passed at last Tuesday's public meeting m the Town! HalL He did not think there would be Any doubt that such a National Fund as mentioned by Mr Miles would be established. In the meantime -the- money that was being raised was bein«_f paid into a separate account at the Union Bank, and would remain there until rthe National Fnnd was es-tablished-arid trustees appointed. If tho other centres were not disposed to cooperate then tha fund would become a >W*elliiijrton* district fund, and trustees would have to be appointed to act with him' as administrators.
