MARTIAL SPIRIT- OF THE ITALIANS RACE TO SET FOOT ON AUSTRIAN SOIL. ROMKL May 27. The Italian army of liberation* had a gratifying initial ' success. At dawn om May 24 they bombarded the Austrian lines and silenced the enemy's guns, \ _ Under cover of artillery the. Italian infantry regiments had a great race for tho, honor of being the first to set foot oi Austrian soil, and are now firmly ■established m Venetian Frhuli. They met a feeble resistance. The inhabitants acclaimed the Italians as deliverers and embraced the soldiers, calling them "Fratelli'" LONDON, May 27. The news tliat Italy had intervened delighted the British * army, and all ranks welcome the alliance. Our officers hold a high opinion of the fighting qualities of the Italian army. :■ The Italian .Ambassador to Berlin departed \in tho morning by carriage nnd drove through the back streets. Herr von Jagow visited the Embassy, but Dr. von Holhvegg declined to receive Signor Bollatti, who was surprised at being pi*evpnted from carrying out the niles of international courtesy. A crowd at the railway station hissed Signor Bollatti. Anti-Italian feeling is high throughout Germany. signor Solandra telegraphed his congratulations to the Venetians for their splendid courage under their first air- : bombing. Flags Avere hoisted on the housetops iv. defiance of the visitor, and crowds on. the piazzas sang patriotic songs, while the municipal bands cheerily played. Five bombs were, dropped, and Avounded four Avomen.
