LAST NIGHT'S TELEGRAMS.

(Per Press Association.) MASTERTON, last night. A single man named Matthew Walters was killed this afternoon by a load of chaff falling on him near Awatoitoi. DUNEDIN, last night. A fresh development in regard to the Maguire case occurred at the Police Court this afternoon. In the mormng Maguire refused to give evidence against U'Urien, charged with using insulting words with intent to provoke a breach of the peace,, and wa3 sentenced to seven days' imprisonment for contempt of Court. In the afternoon O'Brien pleaded guilty, and was fined £2, in default one week's imprisonment. The Magistrate sent for Maguire, and informed him that, as O'Brien had pleaded guilty, the necessity for his detention had disappeared. Tho warrant foi commitment was cancelled, but the Magistrate informed him that defiance of the Court could not be tolerated. He was allowed seven days to pay the fine imposed in the morning. WANGANUI, last night. James Salo, nightwatchman for' the Sash and Door Factory Company, was to-day committed for trial for allegedly firing a revolver at Thomas Blinkhorn, a drover. From the evidence, it appeared that Blinkhom and three other drovers, who had been drinking, but were not drunk, passed Salo about 6 p.m. on the 28th January. Blinkhorn said he called Salo an old sausage, and asked how he was getting on, whereupon accused fired a> revolver at him. Accused's story was that Blinkhorn called him a German, embellished with an offensive adjective, and threatened him with physical violence. In selfdefence he fired a revolver into the ground to frighten his assailant. Saloj is said to be a Bussian Finn. He is described as an elderly and inoffensive man. . .
