DEATH OF AN INFANT.
An inquest concerning the finding of the body of a newly-born infant at Te Arai Valley on Thursday was opened at the Magistrate's Court this morning, before Mr R. Stone Florance, S.M., coroner. The proceedings were conducted by Senior Sergeant Hutton. Detective McLeod deposed to proceeding to Te Arai Valley on Thursday, when he took charge of the body of an infant child, which , he found had been buried in the garden of Herbert Williamson, of Te Arai. He saw a young woman in bed. She admitted having given birth to the child in question the previous night (3rd inst.), but said, the child was dead when born. She had buried it in the garden. Ho brought the body to the morgue, where it now lies.
Senior Sergeant Hotton, at this stage, applied for an adjournment, intimating that the girl in question would be unable to attend, according to the doctor's advice, for a fortnight. The inquest was accordingly adjourned until the 22nd inat., at 10 a.m.
