MINISTERS AT WAIROA.

RAILWAY AND OTHER DISTRICT MATTERS.

REPLIES TO DEPUTATIONS

(Per Press Association.) WAIROA, this day. The Hons. Rhodes and Bell arrived fr,om Waikaremoana yesterday, and gave a brief audience to representatives of the Borough Council, Chamber of Commerce, and Harbor Board. The questions brought up were the starting of a central section of the railway at Wairoa, metalling the Napier road, stock road to Rotorua, harbor endowment, merging part of the Napier harbor rating area in Wairoa, and acquiring land at Waikaremoana for scenery purposes. hi regard to the railway Mr Bell was impressed by the statement that heavy plant could be landed alongside the work. The Napier road construc-tion-'and metalling should mainly be provided for by special tax, as provided in the Motor Tax Bill of last session. On the question of a harbor endowment he said if Sir Joseph Ward gave a promise to grant 1000 acres, it was the only one pot carried out by the Government. Regarding the stock track to Rotor ua, Mr Rhodes said it was very hard to 'get Mr Fraser to provide tourist roads while the back blocks needed opening up. He feared there wa.s no room for a road for both purposes, except by widening the road round the lake. He gave very little hope of acquiring the bush to the skyline for scenic purposes, > but efforts would still be made in that direction. The Ministers left for Morere hot springs in the evening.
