GISBORNE RACING CLUB

SUMMER MEETING— FIRST DA1 T ;

A» was indicated iv.. our last issue, the first day of the Gisborne Racing dub's summer meeting- proved a most successful outing yesterday afternoon. The racing all" through' was interesting, the exciting finishes being another testimony to Mr H. Coyle's careful handicapping. During the afternoon the sum of £13,805 was invested on the totaliaator, ;ia against £11,266' for the ficst day last year. v ' Wi::ii the horses returned after the big race at the Gisborne Racing Club's meeting yesterday the winner was paraded on the lawn m front of the grandHfeand. and Mr G. Matt-Tiewson, president of the club, presented the handsome cup to the trainer, Mr, Neale, .on behalf of tln^ owner, of Iliad's Hero, Mr J; Armstrong. The president expressed pkasure at handing the cup over to Mr Armstrong, whom he congratulated upon his win. Cheers were given for the owner, trainer, and jockey. In this race Mr H. Je Lautour had hard luck with Lady Ali<ia. The mare had led> all the way, and when fighting out a great finish, which looked Jike resulting m her favor, the stirrup leather broke, and the rider was .placed at a disadvantage^,..
