THE RETURNED TROOPERS.
GENERAL GODLEY'S REPORT,
Writing to the Minister, for Defence from Cairo, General Godley says: — "I have'* r had a lot- of trouble over the inoculation question, "and at one time, as I wrote to you, there were 47 men and m addition some on the Arawa, who had not been done. I then said that I should make arrangements either to send back to New Zealand or leave at the base, those, men who still refused to be done. This had the effect- of bringing m a few more, but yesterday there .were still, about 50 who absolutelypersisted m .their, .refusal. In this country, .M:here everybody gets inoculated as a matter, of 'course, i,t wpuld,be, very wrong to risk keeping them, ; so I had them paraded last.n\gnt and tpld them that, though" I" relight respect t-h© con\ scientio.us objections;, and did not (m any,,way wish to . !ttoeaten them, . my first, .duty was tp the fprpe as a whole, and, I., could not.. risk .^he health of the men by.am outbrqal^of enteric by keeping thpsp.-nrh^ ,ref used to sulbrait to reasonable precautions. . This, had the effect of bringing m half a <Jozen, but I am afraid there are still about 40, whom I am sending back by the Athenic along, irith a few, ..of. the worst characters.' The sending back of ihe" latter and of those not inoculated wiU have a very- good effect- on the discipline and efficiency of the force, as it will make everybody realise that they must -tfonfofm, to necessary orders 5 and also that : we , have no use for "wastefs." ■.-•■.-.. *.
