FAILURE OF GERMAN COUP-DE-MAIN.

BRITISH DEFEAT VIOLENT

ATTACK

__„ . PARIS, Nov. 7. Official: The Germans counter-attack-ed the Belgians, who advanced on the right bank of the Yser at Nieuport to Lombaertzyde, but the Belgians were supported m time, and the situation on that side was completely restored. Marines repelled a counter-attack on Dixmude.

We have progressed around Bixshoote.

The British again assumed the offensive south of Ypres, and defeated a particularly violent attack by a recentlyarrived ; German Axnvy Corps. The British repulsed violent attacks on Neuve Chappe&e. We have stopped several day and night attacks between the La Basse Canal and Arras, and between Arras and the Oise.

We have slightly progressed at Vermilles and south of Aix Noulette. We continue to gain ground recently lost at Vailly, and have repelled fresh attacks m the Argonne, where we have progressed at several points, and have occupied Harbourt and Nogeville. Tlie enemy made unsuccessful attacks on the heights of the Meuse. South-east of Verdun and the Apremont forest and south-east of Si. Mihiel we have carried a few trenches.

At St. Remy the Germans suffered considerable losses m attacking the approaches _to Grand Courrouede and Nancy.

A German coup-de-main against the heights dominating Golde Saint Marie completely failed.
