STEAMER JANUS ON FIRE.
(Per Press - Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. ' A cable received concerning the steamer janus, reported on fire off the Australian coast, states that it is .expected the .damage will be very heavy. , The Janus had a large cargo of eastern '•produce for Australia and New . Zealand, including urgently needed supplies of Indian and Ceylon tea. '" " " Messrs Dalgety and Co. were advised by cable on Saturday : "Janus on fire." Tlie vessel left Calcutta on August Ist for Melbourne with a large cargo of tea and some woolpacks. Portion of, tho tea is consigned to New Zealand. Tlie vessel was reported from Colombo on August 11th, arid as she was due at Melbourne to-day it is believed that the outbreak occurred between West Australia and Melbourne, probably at Adelaide. '
