MADAME CLEAYE'S CONCERT.

The concerts organised- by Madame GJeave always prove a great musical treat, and that„.^iven m the Scottish hall last night .was no exception to the rule. The , numerous • -counter-attrac-tions had some effect on the attendances but the entertaninent was marked t With much enthusiasm, the fine programme presented being greatly enjoyed. MadamO Gleaye herself was m splendid roice, amd was heai'd to much advantage ,m a choice selection of songs, which included "Softly Awakes My Heart" (from "Samson and Delilah," by C. Madame Gleave was encored for every nunxber, her responses being "My Dear Soul," "When the Birds Go North Again>" and <IA Token." The other lakiy vocalists were -.Miss Florrie Taylor and Miss Lorna Mortleman.The former sang "Rose,^softly Blooming" (Spohr), .which was Vigorously encored, and "The Fairy Pipers" (Herbert Brewer), and Miss Mortleman sang •"Butterflies," :and as .-an* encore >.'Flow, Gentje Barque." Both, aire young singers, with sweet voices, and although rather nervous, acquitted themselves well, and were'; enthusiastically applaxided. Mr A. V. 'Stacnpjywbo. is< always a great favorite on a Concert platform, was m good voice, .as: ueual,-. and his singing proved popular. His first number ; was "Life" (Blumentlhal), and be responded with . ".When.' the. Heart is Young" *'for an encore. Later on he sang ■ Brune Huhn's stirring song, "Invictus," which suited his^. voice splendidly; and evoked prolonged applause. He sang as an encore "When the Swallows Homeward '< Fly." vHe also took part m a duet witJh Mr Hampton, "The Moon Hath Raised" (Benedict), for which there was an insistent recall, and a. repetition wsu? given,,. Mr Hampton, m addition to singing in 'this duet, sang the solo, "Like Stars Above" (Squire), and for an encore.. he sang "The Birth of Morn." Mr Sydney T. Lewis, late organist at St. Andrew's Church, New Plymouth, considerably strengthened the programme by his able pianoforte solos, which included "Chant d'Amour" (Paderewsld), .-.-,- "Mardhe Hongroise" (Henri Kowalski), ' '.'Silhouette"'' (Cole-ridge-Taylor), and "Polish Donee" ((Scharwenka), m .additioii* to encore numbers. Eh.dh composition was bril : liiantly played, and was greatly approbated by the audience.
