BLACKBALLERS' BEATEN.
(Special to Herald.)
, AUCKLAND, this day. One action on the part of the Bricklayers' Union in blackballing the oontract/for the upw Grammar School,' which is being erected at a cost of £31,000, has failed in its object, presuming such' to have been an attempt to stop work on, the job. It will be re-membered-that three weeks ago a dozen bricklayers 'employed on the new building downed topis, because the contractor (Mfr.W. E f Hutchinson) had in his employ a man who had been blacklisted at the time; of the recent strike. The reason for the blackball was that the man concerned > was, alleged to haVe worked during strike time on another blackballed job, and that he had refused to cease work when asked' to do so by officials oi the Bricklayers' Union. The story of the nfan concerned is a distinct genial. He declares that he did not work, at all during strike time as a bricklayer, but only as & member of the Plasterers' Union, which union was not on strike ; and t furthermore, he states that he was not on a blackballed job at tha't or any other period. That latest development in the matter is that, despite the blackball, work on the new building ..proceeds merrily enough. Twelve men are employed as bricklayers,, equal to the number who downed tools.' Twp more joift on Monday, aind three arrive from the South on Wednesday. These men have a million bricks to lay, and are assured' of constant work for the next 12 months. It has been further stated tha£ yrork is so slack in the South that as many men as wanted can be sent to Auckland without delay.
