CHARGES AGAINST SHAREBROKER

ENORMOUS SUMS INVOLVED

(Press Assn.— By Telegraph— Copyright.)

(Received April 9, 9.30 a.m.)

LONDON* April 8.

Mr Bodkin, K.C., counsel for the prosecution, m the case against the bankrupt sharebroker Fenner, Said that owing to the large number of transactions and the enormous sums involved, he must deal with several .cases separately.

The charges against Fenner of fraudulent conversion of share certificates, number seventy-eight. Those concerning Lord Murray's shares, purchased on benalf of the liberal party, involve a sum of- £26,198. • Fenner was arrested in' Paris on February llth. He left England m March or April of last year, and lived m Paris, at any rate since July 23rd, m an hotel m the Etoile quarter, under the assumed name of Edward Warren. He was arrested at his hotel by Detective Bertin, who asked him his name. Fenner, taken by surprise; began to stutter out his real name, but stopped himself m time, and replied "Warren." Thp detective then said, "Come now, aren't you Mr Fenner?" "Yes, all right, I'm Fenner. I shall not attempt to delay extradition, and would like to go back to England as quickly as possible," replied the snipposed Warren. . Fenner at once stated tliat he did not intend to oppose extradition, but even with a willing prisoner the process of extradition m France takes about six or seven weeks. Departmental machinery is usually slow. There are no legal preliminaries m the French code corresponding to those of the English code, and mo magistrate has to be satisfied that there is a case for' extradition, the only question to be determined before the Judge d'lnstruction being that of identity. Mr Fenner appeared to have considered himself quite safe from arrest. Every morning he spent the fashionable quarter of an hour m the Boia de Boulogne. He took most of his meals m restaurants m tho Etoile miarter. arid apparently had a large circle of English friends or acquaintance* m Paris, for on the day of his arrest he lunched with an "English friend at a restaurant iri the Avenue de h>. Grand Armee, and then went to a Duval establishment, where he met several other acquaintances.
