BOROUGH MATTERS.
A general committee meeting of the Borough Council was held last evening, there being present : His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. R. Kirk), 'Crs. Collins, Bright, Hill, Wade, and Wildish. The question, of the awkward corner on the Riverside road, near Lister hospital, was considered, and it was decided to ask the Engineer to do what he could to minimise any possible danger. It was decided to have a light placed m the centre of Kaiti bridge, and the Engineer was instructed to place lights also on the new Waimata bridge. The Engineer brought up a recommendation that a channel be put m m Peel street to obviate a certain nuisance, and the matter was referred to the Estimates Committee to take into consideration when ' the estimates for the coming year are being considered. Certain recommendations of the Engineer regarding the sewerage system were considered m detail. One of the recommendations was that the cleaning eyes m the house connections should' be done away with and inspection chambers substituted. It was decided that the by-law should remain as at present, and that the Engineer be instructed to enforce the by-law where he considered ft necessary. It was decided that joints m the sewerage drains should be of cement m lieu of bitumen. A recommendation regarding intercepting traps was left over until the report of the Government Engineer comes to hand. It was aljo decided to Tikve a more regular and thorough inspection of drains. ** Tlie question of testing of pipes was, nt his request, referred back to the Engineer. In reference to Messrs Hawkes and Co. 'a request that the by-law be altered to permit of the u?e of white pine timber m the construction of buildings, it was decided that it would be a retrodgrade step to do no, and that the by-law remain as at present. Tlie Engineer was instructed to attend to the hojes m the Peel street bridge. Various tenders for General supplies were _ submitted, and the Town Clerk was instructed to nrepare a renort for next meeting with the tenders scheduled.
