Hugh Dalrymple, an ex-convict, sued Baroness von Goetz, a wealthy philanthropist and organiser of a farm for discharged prisoners. Dalrymple alleged that he had loaned the baroness money. He produceS scores of the baroness's letters • containing endearments. A sensation was caused by the crossexamination when counsel proved that Dalrymple had been convicted of frauds on women m 1896. In order to explain the discrepancies m the letters Dalrymple alleged that his own brother was responsible. Dalrymple's counsel threw up his brief, and a verdict was returned -for defendant. .The judge impounded 100 letters, which were obvious forgeries. Evidence was given that the baroness had £40,000 m the bank at the time of the blackmailing.
