Local territorials srtould doubtless be looking forward with more than usual interest to the forthcoming annual training camp, to be held about the end of April, near Takapau. In addition to the fact that - the camp will comprise all branches of the service, and m fact represent as complete a mobilisation as . possible of the numeroius corps throughout the Wellington military district, the territorials i, will have the distinction of a visit from General lan Hamilton. Without ' transgressing the law, the local" half-holiday can, on the proclama■tion of the Mayor, be altered, and as the Australian cricketers arrive here on Friday, the 20th inst, and commence their play with our local cricketers on that day, the Cricket Association are asking the Retailers' Association to consider holding tlie half-holiday on the Friday. "Press week," as it might be termed, will this year be held at New Plymouth during the third week m this month, when the annual meeting* of the United Press Association, Newspaper Proprietors' Association of Xew Zealand, and Xew Zealand Maste» , Printers' Association will be held. It is- expected that the business to be dealt with will take almost a full Meek to transact. Several Australian newspaper' proprietors will.be present at the 'conferences. We have received from Messrs Chrisp and Son a copy^ of a- new song, entitled "A Little Love/ a Little Kiss" (Un Peu d'Amour), which is described as • one of the most popular songs of recent years, and is reported to have been taken up enthusiastically throughout Australasia. The song has been rendered with much success by Mr John McCormack, who recently toured Xew Zealand. It is published as' a song m three keys, as piano 'and violin solos, and m various other arrangements. A party of Government surveyors is at present employed m the Ruakituri district, not far from Waikaremoana. I The surveyors are engaged upon the subI division of the .Wa-ipaoa. block. One of the. party, a young man unaccustomed to bush work, met with a painful accident recently, cutting his foot severely with an axe. He was carried by his companions over most precipitous country, and five camp was reached after a most trying journey. Thence he was conveyed by horseback to Lake House, and subsequently taken by coach to the Wairoa hospital. On Sunday afternoon a group of people were idly watching Lake Rotorua when they noticed a strange commfttion m the water off Kawaha Point. There were various conjectures as to the cause, but finally it was agreed that it was the work of an "awhiowhio," or whirlwind! To the' consternation of the spectators, spindrift appeared m the clouds, and the troubling of tho waters increased while travelling at a good speed m an easterly direction. Eventually the connection between ' the water and the' clouds became complete, and a genuine waterspout -was formed m front of the interested arid excited onlookers. The flexibility of the column of water was clearly demonstrated. Sometimes it was curved, then it straightened and lengthened itself, being, followed by a waxing and waving with an almost constant billowy motion. At times it appeared as if the waterspout was composed of a number of slender and distinct columns. . Tho contentious question of the locking of the Murray will be dealt. with at a conference between the Australian State Premiers and the Prime Minister of the Commonwealth, on a date to be arranged. The States welcome the advent of the Commonwealth m the conference, because it is considered that Federal contribution will not be less than £1,000,000. In regard to South Australia's position, the Premier of that State (Mr Peake) made a statement last week. "We will not," said Mr Peake, "indeed we cannot, go on 'with the Lake Victoria works unless New South Wales and Victoria agree. The question of riparian rights does not have any direct bearing oil the matter of providing a storage scheme at Lake Victoria. Under < our riparian right we could only insist upon having the sufficient supply to which we ore entitled. The conference cannot decide that irrigation is of paramount importance. That is a legal question. The whole objective is to secure an agreement that will be equally fair to the three States concerned, without having recourse to law," — — ■ ' ' i
