SEVERE EARTHQUAKE.

ALARM IX WELLINGTON* (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, last night. An earthquake, the most severe since 1904, occurred at 11.35 a.m. to-day. The tremors lasted fully five seconds, one being particularly violent. Tlie post office clock chimed and stopped, and many other pendulum and electric clocks m various parts of the city stopped. In some business premises windows were damaged. People, alarmed, left the churches, and people on the wharves and ships also got a scare, and made m some cases record time for terra firma. A wall of the. basilica of the jSacred Heart was cracked, but the congregation remained quiet at the exhortation of the priest. WELLINGTON, this day. Yesterday's earthquake was followed by a -light shock! m the afternoon, and another about 7 this morning. PALMERSTON N., last night. A severe shock of earthquake was felt here at 11.30 this morning.
