SYDNEY STATE BAKERY.
EXPECTED TO PRODUCE BREAD AT ID PER x'OUND. 1 (Press Assn. — By Telegraph — Copyright.) (Received Feb. 7, 9.5 a.m.) SVDNEr, Feb. 7. The Minister of Justice announces that the Government is starting a State I bakery to supply Government institutions. With the steadily-increasing cost of living the Government found itself having to pay more each year for the upkeep of institutions. Tho question of keeping down- the cost was fast becoming acute. The tenders for bread this year showed an increase of 28 per cent, compared with last year's. He was convinced that there was no real justification for this immense increase. In support of his contention that a ring existed among the bakers he stated that the Government had refused to accept the lowest tenders, and called fresh ' ones, which showted a largo drop, /the ! Bakers apparently having guessed that inquiries were afoot to start a Govern--1 ment establishment. After careful consideration the Government had purchased' the up-to-date bakery of Coss and Sons, Stanmore, and would start baking for their own institutions m February. It was expected to produce bread at a penny per pound.
