CHARTERED COMPANY'S CHEQUE. SALISBURY (Rhodesia), Dec. 20. Sir Starr Jameson, President of the British South Africa- Company, addressing a meeting here this evening, emphasised the fact thatOßhodesia~mu.st choose between the Chartered Company and the Union of South Africa..: ' Th© Ixpp<?ri»l Government had the right to review the charter m 1914, but renewal' 'must be m terms" of the" charter. li, hoAvever, some unexpected prospertiy came to Rhodesia .within a couple of years of a reneAval, the Chartered Company could not .withstand responsible Government. The feAV- advocates, of Crown. Colony Government seemed to forget that they had this at the present moment' Avith the Chartered Company's cheque book between Downing street and themselves. Sir Starr Jameson read an extract from a Colonial -Office letter of 1911, stating ; that any future differences between elected legislators aiid tlie Chartered Com.pany would inevitably bring up the iquestion of entering the .Union. •He hinted, at the possibility of the inclusion of Northern and Southern Rhodesia and the Bechuanaland Protectorate j' in a great self-governing State from the Congo to Mafekingj Avhich Avould be a monument to Oe.il Rhodes' s memory. m ' i '■'* •'.
