£70,000 FOR A PICTURE.
FAMOUS TITTAN GOES TO AMERICA. : NEW YORK, December 21. Titian's famous portrait of Philip 11. of Spain has been bought, from Sir Hugh Lane by Mrs. T. J. Emery, of Cincinnati, and is to be presented by her to the Cincinnati Art Museum. The pic ; ture arrived m this country a week ago. The price which Mrs Emery, who is known m this country as a famous art patron, paid for the picture is said to be £70,000. Sir Hugh Lane is quoted by the New York Sun as follows : — "Mrs Emery bought the picture without haA-ing seen it. She relied entirely on its reputation and a photograph." Philip 11. sat for the picture m 1550, and it remained m Titian's possession until his death. He used it as tho j moeiel for several other pictures, and on his death it passed to his son. The portrait of Philip 11. Avas from Sir Hugh Lane's personal xollection m Loudon. Before Sir Hugh acquired the picture it had been for many years the treasureel possession of the late Professor A-on Lenbach. He purchased it from tho C.uistiniani family of th© Palazza Barbavigo, Padua, who acquired it from Titian's son*
