At the Fire Brigades' competition, the reel ladder event, five men, resulted : Dannevirke, 1.7, 1 ; Dunedih South, 1.9 1-5, 2; Grey Lynn, 1.11 2-5, 3; Dcvonport. 1.13 2-5, 4. WELLINGTON, this day. A number of prisoners who had been found guilty of charges arising out of the strike riots were sentenced by the Chief Justice to-day. His Honor said that the rioting was very peculiar and .was of a very serious character. In fact he knew of no riot of such a serious character having taken place m New Zealand. Max Wolfe, for, assault and obscene language, was sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment : Albert Anderson, for taking part m an unlawful, assembly, twelve months; Walter Barton, for taking part m a riot, eight months • John Troy,- for assault and causing bodily harm, four months. Additional sentences m the strike cases were; Ackland, 12 months' impiiisonment; CWolough, 21 months ; Hassett, two years ; Johnson, nine months ; Seal, seven months *} Beaumont, nine months; Parker, seven months ; Stephens, three months ; Stuparich, twelve months. CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Tlie Governor has received a cable message, stating that the report of the Duke of Connaueht's narrow escape from accident m the Canadian railway yard was entirely untrue. * ' A Stock Exchange sale of Talisman shares is reported at £2 3s 3d. Early this morning a threshing mil! owned by Thomas Shields, was destroyed by fire on a farm near Hawarden. Arson is suspected. The loss is estimated at £350. In Chambers, Mr Justice Denniston heard an application from a man aged 39 years, for permission to marry a gir] aged 18 years. The father n out of the country, and the mother refused on account of .the disparity of ages. The registrar was therefore unable to issue a certificate. Tho judge interviewed the parties, and granted un order for the issue of a certificate by the registrar.
