(Special to Herald.) CHRISTCarU^vCH, this day. Chatting about the open golf cham-_ pionship at Sandringham links, near Olburne, Mr D. Hood, the well-known Christchurch coach, said,.t'Aat Ivo Wlntton's average of 75^ was a remarkably good one. It alone demonstrated Whitton's abilities as an amateur player of the first rank. y ; l<e Fevre, another Victorian amateur, who was Whitton's run-ner-up, also did remarkably, well, with an average ..pf -164. Clements, >. the iChristchurch yplayer, with 82A, had a very creditable average, considering his unfamiliafity with .Australian courses.
-Speaking of the green at Sandringham, Mr" Hood said that he had hot had personai acquaintance with it, but he und >"stood that it was long and testing, though there were special good lies thrjugrh 'the green. All .the greens at Sandringham, indeed, had excellent reputations amongst players m Australasia; This was the result of the expenditure of vast sums of money and of unlimited pains. . , :]
Mr lies, professional coach of the Shirley Golf Club, stated that Mr Ivo Whitton, .who was about 21 years of age, was very free and easy m his play, and had a. deliberate styles He wasted no .time over; his shots, and always seemed to have his mind made up', to know what club; to use before 'he got to his ball. He learnt his ,golf m Victoria at the Metropolitan Golf Club; and had played since he was a young schoolboy. He had been made a life member of the Metropolitan Club after winning the* open championship the previous year. Mr Hes stated that he considered Whitton one of the finest amateur golfers who had ever played m Australia. He played no other game, and put m all his spare time on the links all the year round. ,
