BIBLE IN SCHOOLS.
PREMIER'S EMPHATIC REPLY. NO REFERENDUM LIKELY. (Per Press AssociationsWELLINGTON, this day. A deputation representing th^ National Schools Defence, League waited on the Premier this morning, asking the Government's attitude on the > Bible m schools question, and to urge the Government not to introduce a referendum on the Bible m schools. Educationalists predominated m the deputation, which advanced many arguments m support of the representations. ; 9 Mr Mas£ey gave an emphatic reply. JTe said he could not speak for the Government, "because the Cabinet had never considered the question, but for himself he had, ever since he had been m politics, and long before, been strongly m favor of free, secular, and compulsory education. He assured the deputation that so long as the present Government remained m offios nothing would be done inconsistent with the principle of free, compulsory and: secular system of the Dominion. The deputation 'retired, .satisfied that a referendum will not be taken on the subject. -
