Judge Jones left Wairoa this morning to hold a sitting ©f the Native Land Court at Nuhaka.

Mr Hemingway, a Taranaki journalist, ha* been offered the position of general secretary for th* Reform party m New Zealand.-

Mr William Quick, who was accidentally shot m the leg while out pig-hunt-ing at Matawai on Friday afternoon, was to-day reported to be doing as well as can be expected.

The Mayor of Auckland (Mr C. JParr) lias accepted the presidency of the New Zealand Chess Association- The association is to hold its annual championship tournament m Auckland m December. ,

Sir Joseph and Lady Ward formed part of the large Aioert Hall gathering I which celebrated the departure of XWo ; members of Dr. Harriss's Imperial Choir to sing at the Ghent International Exhibition. Various speeches were delivered, and Sir Joseph declared that Dr. Harriss was spreading the gospel ot a United Empire m the most practical way a man could do.

Me J. . E. Main, of Christchurch, lias been appointed works foreman at Messr3 Niven and Co.'s local engineering works. Mr Main was for 12 years chief engineer and works foreman at Messrs Bowron Bros., Christchurch, and for 11 years ■waa leading hand and works foreman at tbe Crown Iron Works, Christchurch. Having had a considerable all-round experience, the firm should be m a position to maitain a high standard of work m the various branches of its engineering business.
